Martha Jobe (Grandma)
Martha's Own Bread
My grandmother Martha Jobe was a fiercely strong woman with a legacy born from the many lives she touched and made better for having known her! She was first and foremost a deeply devoted Christian woman who taught her family that the most important things in life are the eternal things! She was active all her life in the little church that was just down the road from her house. I remember many Sundays walking home from church to have lunch with her and the rest of our family that would come over. I don't remember much about the specific meal but I will always remember her home made bread. In all my life I never saw her use a measuring cup she just threw in a pinch of this and a bit of that and out came deliciousness. As a young kid I never knew the full story but as I grew I learned why she didn't need to measure much. She must have baked many thousands of loaves in her lifetime!
You see my Grandfather passed away at an early age leaving his wife, my beautiful grandmother, behind to raise their young family. Her kindness and love transformed that young family into extraordinarily kind and generous people all. Her legacy can be seen in that young family she shepherded, and in the love that she gave, that in turn can be seen from all the members of my family.
You might be wondering at this point where bread bakes into this story right? Well as you can imagine five kids eat a fair bit, and baking bread was one of the things that she did in order to help feed her family. But other people loved her bread as well and soon she was making bread for the entire community. Her little "bakery" consisted of multiple ovens at her house where she turned out enough bread to feed an army! I suppose its telling that her recipe, which she only needed to write down for our benefit, makes 10 loaves at a time! We will be producing loaves that are Martha's Own Bread in order to honor her life and legacy!
It's not the bread that we are honoring but her endless love and tenacity even during unimaginable crisis. In that spirit we are honored to be able to donate a portion of the profit from the bread we sell to support a local Christian organization that is helping young children and families during unimaginable crisis.
